i love cupcakes... always have and always will :) i remember hoarding from a bus mate who sold mini cupcakes at p2 a piece when i was in grade school. this was waaay before the Cupcake by Sonja's craze. during that time the "in" cupcakes were the clown shaped ones from Gateau de Manille or the beehives in Sugar house. yum yum yum.

this afternoon i bought a box of 4 sugar free cupcakes (p30 each) at a the KG Kitchen and Cakes stall at Tiendesitas. the cupcakes look yummy (and photogenic too) but are a disappointment! the chiffon is dry and has absorbed the smell of the cake refrigerator... sobrang "lasang ref!". sad. maybe its because the stall does not get a fresh batch often but still-- this is not an excuse to sell stale cupcakes! i checked the receipt and found out that they have a main store at Whiteplains... maybe i'll drop by soon and buy there to compare freshness. will also drop by Gateau de Manille (since it is in the area na naman- haha!) and check if they still have those clown cupcakes :)

I have been patronizing this little hole-in-the wall shop for over a decade now and have fallen in love with their personal apple pies, white chocolate mousse and cheesecakes. even if i live as far away as Paranaque, i would once in a while pick up some cakes as pasalubong for my girlfried back then.
Everytime a friend of mine asks where to get a nice cake, i would, without hesitation, recommend Gatteau.
this was until i went there to have lunch last week.
i will not go into detail but here are some facts
1. SERVICE TOOK ALMOST AN HOUR JUST TO BRING OUT MY SOUP ORDER.
2. THEY CLAIM THAT THEY SERVE GRILLED BEEF RIBS WHEN IN FACT, THEY SERVE EITHER THE SHOULDER OR THE HIP WHICH ARE CUT SO THIN AS TO MIMICK RIBS. THEY ACTUALLY SERVED ME THE JOINT PART WHICH WAS INEDIBLE. TRUTH IN ADVERTISING. I HOPE THAT RINGS A BELL.
3. MY FIANCEES PORTION WAS RAW. IF IT WERE ANY RARER, IM SURE THAT PIECE OF COW WOULD HAVE WALKED OUT OF THE RESTAURANT.
4. AFTER INFORMING THE WAITRESS OF THE NIGHTMARISH SERVICE, INEDIBLE FOOD AND INCONSISTENT ADVERTISING ON THE MENU, (I ASSUME IT WAS THE OWNER I SAW THERE)NO HIGHER MANAGEMENT EVEN ATTEMPTED TO APOLOGIZE PERSONALLY.
amazing how i have been blindly recommending a place where quality is so obviously superceded by making a quick buck. it is shocking that from a really nice place that i practically grew up with, this place is nothing different from the sidewalk ihaw ihaw joints just a few meters down from its location.
never again shall i set foot at this restaurant nor shall i recommend it.
